Dajana Mar was born with long black hair on September 12, 1979 in Zagreb. As soon as she first cried “La-la” with her clear voice, people suspected who she may become. She plays instruments, sings and dances since she became aware of herself. When she was a child, she used to sing in choires, and in 2000 she took up solo vocal training with the Rock Academy in Zagreb. She continued training with Mirela Brnetić, prof., and she is still her student today. Dajana regards this as extremely important and valuable experience of self-investment. She graduated Facutly of Journalism. Musical style that she first took up was jazz, her first love to which she returns gladly and to which she’d like to dedicate another album in the future. So, in 2005, she was awarded Marijan Marjanović The Best New Jazz Artist award by Jazz Club Zagreb. Precisely that moment, on April 6 2005, when she appeared side to side with leading jazz artists (Julije Njikoš, Borna Šercar, Mladen Baraković, Igor Savin) was a breaking point and she decided to take her chances in the musical world. Her role models are mostly out of this time and belong to the golden days of jazz, 40-ies, 50-ies and 60-ies, but she is also abundantly inspired by newer vocals like Stacey Kent, Aretha Franklin, Eva Cassidy, Katie Melua, Natalie Cole and numerous others. Starting as a back vocal, and continuing with remakes of jazz, soul and blues standards she stood out at many appearances. Presently, she is in the studio preparing her first solo album which she will certainly enrich with ambience styled rooted in jazz and blues tradition. On the album, she collaborates with many top songwriters and musicians, and those include: Sandra Sagena, Marko Križan, Arsen Dedić and Matija Dedić; she will also present herself as a songwriter. She distinguishes herself with sensual and slightly “old-fashioned” rustic renaissance vocal, rich and light at the same time, and also with specific expression that is soft and pleasant to the ear at the same time. With her voice and appearance, she creates images that are rustic, warm, fairy-like, natural, feminine and sensual. She is a lady, a lady in a dress, she is a fairy, she belongs to herself. Through voice and music she opens up her world to you. |
